I’m Dr. Sal, a physician and surgeon with over 30 years of experience, and today, we’ll dive into a critical topic: What does it take to achieve true, lasting health aligned with God’s will?
Many people assume that health is something managed with occasional fixes—treatments or a new year’s resolution. But God created our bodies to thrive continuously, not to break down under poor choices. True wellness isn’t just a temporary fix; it’s a disciplined, intentional approach to life. Let’s explore how we can better align our health practices with God’s purpose for us.
Understanding Our Power: Health Is a Choice, Not a Coincidence
God designed our bodies magnificently, each cell and system operating through countless intricate processes that keep us alive and well. But these processes aren’t infallible; they’re affected by how we choose to live. Every time we eat, sleep, and exercise (or don’t), we shape our health.
Consider this: if you’re 30 to 40 pounds overweight, chronically fatigued, or dependent on medication, it’s likely a sign that your choices need realignment with God’s natural design for health. As Albert Einstein once reflected, such incredible intricacy in the human body couldn’t have come about by chance. It’s our job to honor this design by making choices that support it.
Food in 1957 vs. Today: A Case for Whole, Unprocessed Foods
In 1957, foods were simpler. Ice cream was made with real cream and sugar, without the additives, preservatives, and artificial flavors we see today. Fast forward, and even basic ingredients like oils and sugars have been transformed into highly processed substances that harm our bodies over time.
For example, McDonald’s once used natural animal lard for frying, but today’s fast-food oils contain trans fats and hydrogenated oils. Even store-bought lard is no longer what it once was. Processed foods have infiltrated nearly every aisle, making it harder for us to find and consume pure, nourishing options. Yet, to honor the body God has given us, we must choose foods closer to their natural forms: whole grains, real sugars, fresh produce, and pure oils like olive or avocado.
Discipline in Daily Choices: Partnering with God in Health
If we view God as some distant, external force we call on only in times of crisis, we miss the point. God gave us the freedom to make choices, empowering us to shape our lives through these decisions. Our power, given by God, allows us to create change. But when we ignore this power, giving in to unhealthy habits or relying on quick fixes, we’re not living in partnership with Him.
Instead, by aligning our will with God’s, we awaken to our true potential for health and wellness. We become the vessels through which God’s power to heal and sustain is realized.
Realigning Our Habits: The Power of Discipline
Eighty-five percent of our health is determined by what we eat. Gym workouts and physical activities play an essential role, but they aren’t substitutes for a good diet. Real health transformation happens when we take control of our eating habits. Start by avoiding trans fats, added sugars, and overly processed foods. Opt for natural, minimally processed options like olive oil, nuts, and fresh produce.
Once you’ve reached a healthy weight and routine, you can indulge occasionally—but remember, true discipline means even these indulgences should honor God’s natural design for us. Enjoying a homemade dessert made with real, wholesome ingredients can be a much healthier (and more satisfying) treat than the artificial alternatives.
Building a Lasting Foundation for Health
Daily choices, when made in alignment with God’s will, not only support our bodies but strengthen our minds and spirits. This alignment can enhance every aspect of life—from physical well-being to family, finances, and community relationships. As we nurture our own health, we model God’s design for wellness, influencing those around us and strengthening the community.
To start, take simple steps: read labels, cut out excess sugar, avoid trans fats, and make sure that the foods you consume are as close to their natural state as possible. Small, consistent changes can lead to big improvements in your energy, mental clarity, and overall quality of life.
I hope this message resonates with you and inspires you to take steps toward a life of health and purpose.
